32. AN ARABESQUE, UPRIGHT : IN FOUR PARTS; WITH A CHARIOT
DRAWN BY A GRIFFIN NEAR ITS BASE.
Zanetti, Cabinet Cicoynara, 1837, p. 159, No. 208.
The panel is divided in four tiers. In the uppermost is scroll orna-
ment, with two grotesque heads ; in the second, a Triton 1., trophies
attached to a pole with a tablet inscribed • dv • for • in the centre, and
a grotesque semale figure with the fins of a fish and the legs of an eagle
r. •, in the third, three small figures in an irregular oval 1., and
Hercules and the hydra r. ; in the lowest tier, a young man seated in a
chariot drawn by a griffin.
[275 x 106]
(a) Fine early impression, showing a blueish tint, and partly coloured in light yellow
water-colour; showing plate line.
Purchased 1910.
(b) Clear but worn impression, much of the delicate shading having disappeared ;
plate line and wide margin.
Collection : Hon. Rowland Winn.
Purchased 1870. 6. 25. 1054.
Other impression : Vienna (Alb.).
In comparison with the figures and drawing of the signed plate last
preceding, there seems little doubt of the attribution to G. A. da Brescia.
In the Albertina there is a second panel of similar character and size
(Zanetti, Cab. Cicognara, p. 160, No. 209). Both the plates are cut off just
beyond the centre, as if they were meant to serve merely as patterns for wall
painters or decorators, who would duplicate the design. Another ornament
panel in the xAmbrosiana (measuring 278 x 108) of a similar type may also be by
G. A. da Brescia, and so may Passavant, Zoan Andrea, Nos. 56 and 57 (Paris ;
part of 56 reproduced in Delaborde, Gravure en Italic, p. 135).
f33. PANEL OF SCROLL ORNAMENT: OBLONG (reproduction).
P. v. 111. 55.
In the centre the grotesque head and shoulders of a winged and four-
horned bull protrude from a vase. The lower members of the vase are
continued in scroll-work to the r. and 1., with snakes, a grass-hopper, bird
and other small animals.
[120 x 363] Photograph of a print in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (Douce coll.).
Purchased 1872. 6. 8. 409.
Other impression : Paris, E. de R. (measuring 90 X 334).
34. PANEL OF ORNAMENT WITH GROTESQUE FIGURES.
B. xiii. 138, 68.—P. v. Ill, 58.
In three principal tiers. In the lowest are a man and a woman seated
and leaning back with a child between them: over them is a curtain
with a crown in the centre; next above, two goats with a winged horse
between them ; in the uppermost tier a woman plays a lute. The chies
members os the design are connected by a multitude of devices, marks,
birds and grotesque human figures.
[282 x 171] Fair impression.
Purchased 1859. 8. 6. 321.
Other impressions: Paris (B. N., and E. de R.), Vienna (Alb., and H.-B.), Dresden
