59. ARABESQUE WITH AN EAGLE, TWO SATYRS, AND A CUPID.
Undescribed.
On an ornament composed of two dolphins stands a cupid holding a
bird-cage on his head. Higher up sit two satyrs. At the top a ssapping
eagle stands between two cornucopise. Single border-line.
[142 x 37 : measured to the border line] Fair impression: possibly reworked.
Collection : Hon. Rowland Winn.
Purchased 1870. 6. 25. 1061.
The motive of the bird-cage occurs on two of the drawings attributed to
Nicoletto, (i) Berlin (late Galichon coll., reprod., Gazette des Beaux-Arts,
2e per. II. 149), (ii) British Museum, Malcolm No. 340. See also No. 52
above.
60. TWO GROTESQUE ANIMALS INTERTWINED ABOUT A TREE.
Attributed to Nicoletto da Modena.
P. v. 110, 52 (G. A. da Brescia).
A monster os human shape, with a grotesque head and bird’s claws for
feet, hangs by its arms and legs from the branches os a tree, blowing a
horn. Round the trunk os a tree is coiled another monster, having, like
a centaur, the arms and trunk of a man joined to the body of a horse, a
grotesque lion’s head, and, at the juncture os man and horse, the head,
neck and wings of a bird. The monster doubles his head back upon his
rump and blows a horn. Background shaded with downstrokes from
r. to 1.
[154 x 128] Good impression in greenish-grey ink.
Purchased 1845. 8. 25. 787.
Other impression : Paris (E. de R.).
Reproduction: Durazzo sale catalogue (1872, No. 277).
The design is in the spirit of some of Leonardo’s allegorical grotesques ; but
the character of the engraving is perhaps near enough to that of the two
preceding prints to justify the attribution. Note particularly the relief given
to the figures by the broad and heavy outline.
