A lengthy and highly interesting letter to Mademoiselle Catharine D'Onbril, Ambassadc
de la Eussie ä Madrid. „Most discreet princess! I cannot express to you how I was flattered
by your long letter, and how deeply I was interested by its details. The history of your
dejeuner at the canal was füll of moving incidents. The danger you ran of losing your pro-
visions after you had gained so sharp an appetite; and than the affecting catastrophe of
,,la petite Marie" tumbling into a ditch and being obliged to return home all bespattered
with mud and without her stockings! I hope you drew front this one of those moral lessons
in which you exceel.......Your description of the Tableaux and of the dresses
of the ladies . . . are admirable, and niake me regret that I cannot witness them instcad
of the dead canvas tableaux of Murillo which I am dayly seeking after. The Fornarina
and Rebecca particularly charm me .... We have now arrived at what we consider
the end of our Andalusian tour......One thing I will say, however, and that boldly
too, that of all the fine women I have seen there is a certain circle consisting of four that
assemble every evening around a round table in a certain salon of Madrid, which to my
notion excel all the fair dames of Andalusia. One of these four is named Marie, a second

Charming and interesting letter to Madame D'Oubril. ,,......The Prince has indeed
made me most happy by the cargo of letters and remembrances he has brought me from
the whole family, excepting the little Inez, who being an exceedingly sinall woman, has not,
I presume, advanced far enough in her education to make purses or meddle with pen and
ink........I have seen the ceremonies of Holy week at Rome, yet find much of novelty
and peculiar character in those of Seville. The cathedral of this city is a noble edifice, and
with its gothic gloom and mystery rivals, in some measure, the classic splendour of St. Peters.
The melancholy grandcur of these gothic temples seems more analogous to the solemn and
mystic nature of our faith; and accord wonderfully with the ceremonies of this festival, which
celebrate the awful and affecting story of the sufferings and death of our Saviour. — I under-
stand you remove in a few days, with the family, to Aranjuez, which, after all, is one of
the most delicious spots in Spain. We have no gardens in Andalusia to compare with those
of that truly royal residence, and I belicve there is no place in the world where the nightingales
so eompletety abound. It seems to be the place of their grand parliament where represen-
tations from every part of their tribe meet in a musical debate......I will write to
Mlle. Constance and to the children by other post.......". Mentions Mr. Gessler

Poetic and charming lengthy letter to Mlle. C. D'Oubril. ,,A thousand thanks, most charming
and discreet princess, for the little purse yrou have sent me, and which will ever be precious
to me for having been wrought by your own fair hands.....I am glad to hear that
Louisa Warett has joined your Sunday parties and taken a part in your amusements;
she is very amiable and cannot fail to be a very agreable companion. Her having danced
with the Inf ante will be quite an event in her life as we have no princes in our country, excep-
ting the sons of our Indian Kings may be called so. But they are generally very savage
young gentlemen all painted, and dressed in skins and feathers, and seldom join in any other
dance than the war dance. Your description of the garden of your home in Madrid gives
me quite a desire to be there, though I regret to hear that my old friend the fig-tree has been
cut down; I dont think even the weeping willow would console me for the loss of it, for I have
a great kindness for it, from having passed several pleasant hours under it on moonlight
