CHAPTER XX.

BHUTAN.

Bi[(tt.w is a State on the Himalayan slopes, with an area of
18,000 square miles and a population of 300,000 souls. The present
Ruler of the State is H. 11. I he Maharaja of Bhutan, Sir Uggen
Wangchuk, K.C.S.I., K.C.T.E. On the occasion of the British Mission
to Tibet, the State rendered great service, and since that time a
British Agent has been entertained at the capital of the State.
The contribution of the State to the War consists of the

investment of a lakh of rupees in the Indian War Loan and a supply
of 25 recruits to the Indian Army and 9 recruits to the Indian
Military Police.
The title of G.U.LE. was conferred on the Maharaja on 1st
•January, 1921.
