which give it a peculiar interest. It is a Reforma-
tion drama on the Protestant side, like rnost of the
moraiities, with a combined moraiistic and doctrinal
design, and it presents most of the moraiity devices,
inciuding the Vice in its füllest development. In
style it is cumbersome and ineßrcient, although
about on a level with other moraiities of the period.
Although weighed down by the moraiity conven-
tions and the moraiity diction, the author, in his
way, is striving for realism and, in parts, for a comedy
of manners. In the part of Mary he has attempted
dramatic characterization, as in the account of her
childhood, in her petulance and frowardness.
THE ESPURGATOIRE SAINT PATRIZ OF MARIE DE
FRANCE. By THOMAS ATKINSONjENKINS. The
University of Chicago Press, Decennial Publica-
tions, First Series, Volume VII. Pages 96. 410.
Paper. $1.25 Chicago: The University of
Chicago Press.
The Latin text of the TRACTATUS DE PuRGA-
TORIO SANCTi PATRicii, contained in the Harleian
manuscript, 3846, is printed for the first time, ac-
companied in parallel columns by the old French
metrical translation of Marie de France, made at
the end of the twelfth Century. The precise Version
used by Marie de France has not been found. The
Harleian manuscript represents this version more
completely and better than any manuscript yet made
accessible. The French text has been improved
materially by the comparison made with the Latin
original. The text of the TRACTATUS frorn another
British Museum manuscript (Royal 13, B. VIII) is
printed in full as an appendix.
NATURE's LAWS AND THE MAKING OF PlCTURES.
By W. L. WvLLiE, A. R. A. Wiappers. 4to.

Considering the importance of perspective in
draughtsmanship, it is no wonder that the number
of text-books and treatises on the subject should be
great, for each System of instruction will naturally
give the teaching of perspective from its own point
of view. Professor Wyilie is so well known that
there is no necessity to do more than describe the
volume he has devoted to the essential laws of
draughtsmanship in working from nature. His hand-
some 4to volume is profusely illustrated from an
entirely practical standpoint, giving diagrams illus-
trative of the points he specially endeavors to im-
press upon his readers. Those who are sketching

from nature and who want a thorough mastery of
such subjects as Sloping Plains and their Vanishing
Lines, The Curve of the Earth's Surface, Currents
in Rivers, Roads Running up or down Hill, Vanish-
ing-point of Wind, Curve on the Surface of the
Sea, Refiections in Calm and Ruihed Waters, Wet
Roofs, or Sloping Surfaces, Construction of Draw-
ings from Plans, The Use of the Quadrant, etc.,
could not have a more enlightening exposition of
the subject than Professor Wyllie's volume.

The title of this book is aptly descriptive of its
scope and intention. William Morris, Ruskin, and
other modern prophets of the Home Beautiful, have
preached fruitfully on the subject of the infusion of
the artistic spirit through the utilitarianism of daily
life, and there is no doubt that there is a tendency,
however weak and wrongly directed it may at pres-
ent be, towards the aim of those prophets. This
book will help their disciples to conform with the
ideas of the masters to better effect, both in theory
and practice. To those who are carving, or model-
ling, or working in metal, here is a fruitful source of
Suggestion and advice. The following are the sub-
jects dealt with : Modelling in Clay, Modelling in
Gesso, Wood Carving, Fret Sawing, Poker Work,
Pyrogravure, Leather Decoration, Saw-Piercing,
Etching on Metal, Metal Hammering, Bent Iron-
Work, Applied Design, Ornament, Wall-Paper De-
signing, Textile Designing, Tile Designing, Damaged
China Restoring, " Grangerizing," Taxidermy, etc.
HOMES AND THEIR DECORATION. By LlLLIE

Here is another proof of the foregoing remarks
concerning the present-day tendency towards the
improvement of artistic taste in our utilitarian sur-
roundings. The book under consideration is rather
for the assistance of those who are selecting by pur-
chase the furniture and decorations of their home,
while the previous book was to assist those who
were executing their own ideas in craftsmanship.
The author of the present volume writes : —
" In the following pages I have made no at-
tempt to discuss architectural periods or problems.
My purpose has been to help the bewildered house-
