ln the works of Pastnernak and
Bogdanov-Bietsky there is a decided
tendency to impressionism; but the
most important representatives of
modern Russian painting have de-
vetoped each according to his own
strong individuatity, attaching tittle
importance to schools and catch-words,
and united onty by the tie of a strong
nationat feeting.
In 1872, thirteen of the most pro-
minent students, rebetling against its
conventionat routine, seceded from
the Academy under the teadership
of Kramskoi. They instituted the
" Society of Travetting Exhibitions,"
and sent their works far and wide
over the vast area of their native
tand. Thus art, for the first time,
became truty poputarised in Russia.
