r M '^UNSTALL.—The ninth annual ex-
' hibition of the North StaHordshire
' I Arts Society and Sketching Club
was opened on Nov. 2 8th by Mr.
G. C. Haite, in the Victoria Institute
Museum, TunstaH. The exhibition was the
largestyet held by the society, butitis
a matter of regret that only about twenty
of the 280 exhibits were works of crafts-
manship. There is, however, a probability
of this defect being remedied, inasmuch as
there is a desire on the part of many artists
in the district for the amalgamation of this
association with the Haniey Arts and Crafts
Society, whose exhibitions include a much
larger proportion of examples of applied
art. Mr. Stanley Thorogood, A.R.C.A., the
head of the Burslem School of Art, was the
exhibitor, amongst other pictures, of a pastel
hgure-drawing, a work decorative
in style and rehned in treatment. Mr. H.
Foster Newey, headmaster of the Tunstall
School, exhibited some pieces of jewellery
which were original in design and of good
workmanship, but he excelled in his water-
colour, 7?22/7 (2727 7^77, noticeable for
the excellent drawing of the foreground rocks
and the fine realisation of the effect of sunlight
on the hillside. The painter of the water-
colour, TUc y 77^ C2-22M;7c7*^, Mr. T.
j. Jones, second master at the Burslem
School, evinced a sense of quietude and
power in his poetic treatment of this subject.
A young artist, Mr. C. A. Solon, of Draycott-
le-Moors, exhibited a strong and forceful
study in dark greens and purples, an oii-
painting called 7%; Zk?2Vy IHicZ E. N. S.
T IVERPOOL.—The local artists ex-
jfj hibiting at the Walker Art Gallery
/j this year made a very strong show
^ ^ in portraiture. Many of the ex-
amples were of fine quality, displaying re-
hnement and distinction in drawing, with
choice and delicate arrangements of colour.
