architecture than in ethics. Our buildings are full
of shams and artifices of every sort. Even sim-
plicity is affected, for we build half-timbered houses

THE MEN'S CAFE. ROCHESTER COUNTRY CLUB
(BAolo Ay IV. 77. Board?;:::?:, TTocAo.sTo?', TV. V.)

Though inspired in the first instance by some of the
good modern English work made familiar to
Americans through the pages of this magazine, the
little building is entirely national in spirit, not
affectedly foreign.
Third, all of the ornaments and accessories, from
the compass on the floor of the piazza to the weather
vane on top of the ridge-pole, were suggested by
and are appropriate to the building's position and
function. An apple tree and tire club monogram
are used as motifs, and the decoration from first to
last is a celebration of country sports and country
living. The lines of some Japanese ??;o?: are per-
haps more pleasing than the curves which make up
the letters "C. C. of R." and a Della Robbia
lunette (cast in piaster) from some old church in
Florence would doubtless be more beautiful in the
mantel above the fireplace than the conventional-
ized Central New York landscape (done in Grueby

with metal lath and seven-
eighths inch lumber; we drive
pegs into paneling really held
together with wire nails and
glue; we support floors with
iron I-beams and then erect
hollow wooden beams and
columns to explain the mir-
acle. All this is architectural
mendacity of the most flag-
rant and pernicious kind.
"An honest tale speeds best
being plainly told."
Second, while not lacking
in style, it is not in % style, at
least in none of the historic
styles; its designer did not
permit pre-occupations of this
sort to complicate his problem
or to cloud his judgment.
