CHOOLS AND INSTITUTIONS.
AN EXHIBITION of mezzotints ioaned
from the private coUection of Mr. J.
Pierpont Morgan has been shown in the
print Gallery of the New York Public Library,
Lenox Library Building. It was devoted mainly
to the second half of the eighteenth century
of British work, but included some work as

late as that of Samuel Cousins. All the noted
engravers of the period were represented, such as
McArdell, Green, Dean, Doughty, Dunkarton,
James and Thomas Watson, J. R. Smith, John
Jones and John Young. The collection formed
a notable series of reproductions of paintings by
such men as Sir Joshua Reynolds, George Romney,
Gainsborough, Sir Thomas Lawrence and Sir
Benjamin West; while, as to portraits, which most
of the prints were, they
formed a striking record of
national types, costumes and
fads of the time, such as the
tendency in portraiture for
appearing in a role. The ex-
hibition, which was public,
was supplemented by an op-
portunity to consult illus-
trated works on the history
and technique of mezzotint-
ing in the print room on the
floor below.

THE DETROIT MUSEUM OF
ART has lately had on view
a collection of paintings by
the landscape artist Charles
J. Gruppe. Mr. Gruppe, who
is an American, is a disciple
of the Dutch school and de-
votes himself considerably to
Holland landscapes, in which
he makes a particular study
of the effect of open air and
misty atmospheric condi-
tions. He does not neglect
subjects in his native land
either, as is shown by sev-
eral of his canvases. There
has also been exhibited at
this museum recently collec-
tions of the work of Edward
Ertz and E. T. Hurley.
