panelled on interior walls,
and half logs are laid as a
mantelshelf above the fire-
place. Some fence rails on
which the grey moss of many
years has applied its aesthetic
colouring form the wainscot
in one room.
Although birch bark of
any considerable size is be-
coming exceedingly rare and
almost impossible to find, it
has been secured in large
sheets and preserved in the
exterior gables of one of
the boathouses, and has
also been fitted between the
ceiling beams of a dining-
room, making a novel feat-
ure in both locations.
The grouping and placing
of the buildings that form a
camp exact more than an
architectural fitness. Sewerage is not a trifling
problem in the primeval forest, and the making
of roads and paths and the elimination of rocks
and trees require skillful engineering.

loss of charm to suit the needs of the Adirondack
camp. The main lodge illustrated belongs in a
group that is connected by a covered passageway.
In the employment of local material for the
building of Mr. Adolph Lewisohn's camp, spruce
logs, slabs and poles play an important part, and mutilation of the landscape incidental to building

the clear white
spruce is used.
Sometimes peeled
spruce logs are ad-
mitted in a living
room to give an at-
mosphere of stabil-
ity, and spruce
boards are added.
Small spruce logs
are also built
around the exposed
brick chimneys of a
boathouse in primi-
tive fashion.
Cedar shingles
appear on the roofs,
where they are
stained to meet the
colour scheme of
the underpart, and
birch poles assist
exteriorly. Wide
planks of pine are BOAT HOUSE AND BACHELOR QUARTERS (MR. ADOLPH LEWISOHN'S CAMP)
