Mr. Brigham's work in what he calls "marine
mosaic," has already been the subject of some
extended comment in the STUDIO, and those of our
readers who have not seen specimens of the work
itself will recall the striking originality of his eSects
as shown in the reproductions which we were able
to present. Mr. Brigham uses shells and stones
with glass strongly cemented, to take the place of
rich stained glass work. The skill in utilizing such
products has been acquired only by close applica-
tion and long experience. The method has been
applied successfully to memorial windows, yacht
port lights, cabinet doors, fire screens, hanging
lamps, transparencies and decorative windows.

THE PHILADELPHIA SKETCH CLUB has recently -
had on view an interesting group of pictures by
Mr. Adolphe E. Borie 3d. Most of the canvases
shown had not before been exhibited. The portrait
of Miss Mumford had been seen at the Academy
two years ago. Perhaps the most interesting piece
of work on view was a full length study, GirJ fw a
XwMMO, a clever handling of delicate purples and
greys, which we show herewith. Later the club
had upon its walls a group of water colours by Mr.
Frank F. English.

MR. ARTHUR R. FREEDLANDER will conduct his
Summer School of Painting at Vineyard Haven,
Mass., beginning the 13th of this month and con-
tinuing until September 15. Instruction will be
given in landscape and figure painting, in oil
water colours, and pastel. There will be two
criticisms a week and a general review in the studio
which will be at the disposal of the students and
where materials will be obtainable. During the
summer, sketching tours will be taken to interest-
ing points, including one to Gay Head, the last
surviving Indian settlement. Vineyard Haven, on
the attractive island called "Martha's Vineyard,"
retains all the quaintness of the first settlement
dating back to the seventeenth century. The
town and surrounding country offer interesting
material to the student, abounding as it does, in
picturesque bits of land and sea, while the climate
is decidedly pleasant. Further information may be
obtained from Mr. Freedlander at Vineyard Haven.

The first edition of "Bryan's Biographical and
Critical Dictionary of Painters and Engravers,"
was published in 1816, and since that time it has
held its place without a rival as the most complete
and trustworthy authority on the facts and lives of
the painters and engravers with whom it deals.
