Valerii Epistola ad Ruffinum de coniuge non ducenda, with a
prolix commentary.
The Epistle, as is well known, forms part of the fourth Distinc-
tion of the book of Walter Map, de Nugis Curialium. In
my edition of the text (Anecd. Oxon. Medieval and Modern
Series, XIV. 1914), I have given some account of this and
other Commentaries (p. xxxiii). The author of this Com-
mentary attributed the Epistle to Valerius Maximus.
There is no title. The Prologue begins :
Amicus fidelis protectio fortis Ecc. 6. Dixit Jerdnimus super
illud Math. 12. Qmne regnum in se diuisum, quomodo Con-
cordia res parue crescunt, ita discordia maxime dilabuntur.
It contains 4 distinctions, ending 1 r b : ad dei honorem et ipso
adiuuante ad nostri salutem.
The Epistle is divided into 36 sections and is written in red.
Each section is headed by a handsome initial and partial
border.
Loqui prohibeor et facere non possum—noluptatis. Exposicio . f. 12
Sunt multi qui audita ueritate offenduntur
