One of the most
important and beau-
tifully designed
Orangeries is at
Stowe, the great 17th
century palace of the
Temples in Bucking-
hamshire, now the
seat of the Master of
Kinloss. Everything
at Stowe is on a
large scale and is
treated in the grand
manner. The im-
mense ssight of steps
on the garden front,
and the Corinthian
portico with its door-
way ssanked by niches
holding sculpture,
and its frieze sculp-
tured withfiguresub-
jects in high relief,
with the connecting
pillared galleries
leading to large outer
pavilions; its en-
trance portico of the
same character
ssanked by colon-
nades connecting the
main block with
outer buildings—all
convey the impres-
sion of architectural
magnificence. The
curved range of
orangery, with its
central domed
pavilion and pedi-
mented ends, is in
keeping with the
rest. The ceiling
of the dome is
decorated with a
painted vine trellis
and with classical
figures bearing
garlands.
