A CUP AND COVER OF CRYSTAL AND SILVER GILT
SURMOUNTING the crystal cover is a seated lion, holding a shield, which is engraved
with the arms of the Bavarian noble family of Marquard von Adelzhoven, and inscribed
marqvard von adelzhoven, 1643. The plain crystal is divided into eight sections. The
border of the cover is decorated with oval panels, separated by grotesque masks, and the
edge with large ovolo-work. The lip of the cup is plain and curved. Above and below the crystal
body, which is facetted into Vandykes, is a wide rounded band composed of four masks in high
relief, alternating with four plain bosses, and festoons of flowers and scrolls. The crystal stem
is enclosed at each end in foliage, as is also the top of the octagonal crystal base, the silver-gilt
edge of which is decorated with acanthus leaves in relief.
