A SMALL PEARL AND SILVER CUP
INSIDE the bowl is a dolphin, applied. The lip, inside and outside, is enamelled with festoons
and birds, much of the enamel having disappeared. The mother-of-pearl body is fixed at the
top with a cut cresting of leaves, and at the bottom by a plain silver socket. The vase-shaped
stem is decorated with facetted ovals and is fluted at the bottom. The upper part of the base
is decorated with cherubs and fruit in relief, and the border is set with three emeralds and
three ruby-coloured stones in scutcheons.
Height, 13 cm.
Marks: the mark of Nuremberg and the mark of the maker, Friedrich Hillebrand(t), Hilde-
brand or Hilleprand, who was master in 1580, and died in 1608, K*l (N° 3137 in Rosen-
berg’s Der Goldschmiede Merkzeichen, 2nd edition, 1911).

A large cup by this same maker is at Windsor castle. It was a bequest in 1596 by Henry Wil-
helem, burgomaster of Wurzburg. Lost for several years, it was recovered in 1624 and presented
to the city council of Wurzburg by Christian Baur, counsellor to Ferdinand II. The cup is
illustrated in E. Alfred Jones’s Gold and Silver of Windsor Castle, 1911.
LARGE NAUTILUS SHELL CUP, MOUNTED IN SIL-
VER GILT
THE nautilus shell is held by four narrow straps, stamped with oval ornaments. En-
graved on the plain lip is the following inscription:
DISES SCHNECKEN HAVS
1ST GEFVNDEN IN DISEM HAVS
DARVM SOL MAN FROLICH TRINCKEN DARAVS. I 5 6 2.
The shell is supported by a figure of Neptune riding on a dolphin, which rests on a high oval
pedestal embossed with sea monsters and tritons.
Height, 37cm.
Marks: the mark of Vienna and an unknown maker’s mark, It is also stamped with two
later marks, d. in a circle and c.k. in an oval (N° 5109 in Rosenberg’s Der Goldschmiede
Merkzeichen, 2nd edition, 1911).

A NAUTILUS CUP, MOUNTED IN SILVER
ON the wide lip is a scene representing Neptune and Amphitrite with tritons and
marine subjects, the lower edge having cut acanthus leaves. The shell is held by
three ornamented straps, with winged figures at the tops. It is supported on a nude
boy blowing a conch shell and riding a dolphin. The oval pedestal is supported by
winged monsters and is repousse with sea monsters; the top edge is fluted and the bottom
decorated with acanthus leaves in relief.
