16. FEMALE FIGURE (pi. 76).
H. *31 m.
Standing figure, with r. knee bent and the foot drawn back. Hair
parted and knotted behind; thick wreath and large circular earrings.
The figure wears a zAzAw and an AAza/zbzz which is wrapt closely round
her. Her r. arm is bent across her body at the waist, her lowered 1. holds
a fold of her garment. The 1. foot is broken: cf. Winter, TjyV?/, ii, p. 52,
no. 1.
Fair work, perhaps of the beginning of the Hellenistic age.
This seems to be the pretty female figure of terra-cotta, about 1 ft. in height,
mentioned by Dennis, C3/333 3722/ C37733/37733 2^777*337*333, ii, p. 489.
iy. YOUTH IN CART DRAWN BY DOG (pi. 76).
H. -13 m., L. -09 m.
A shaggy dog is harnessed to a rough cart on which reclines a youth
with long hair: he is naked, except for a mantle thrown over his 1. side.
He supports himself with his r. hand, and turns slightly in that direction.
In his 1. he holds a cornucopiae. Poor work.
l8. RATTLE (?) IN FORM OF VASE WITH GORGONEION
(pi. 76).
H. -09 m.
Straight black hair all round the head, and hanging down in separate
locks on either shoulder. Round black eyes, squat nose, large open
mouth with protruding tusks, snakes round the lower part of face instead
of a beard. The tongue does not protrude much. Archaic work, well
preserved. The vase has still some object in it which rattles.
IQ. PROTOME OF DOG (pi. 76).
H. -13 m.
A shaggy dog with his paws one on each side of a basin. A version,
intended merely for decorative use, of the gargoyle type represented by
no. 25.
20, ARCHAIC FEMALE FIGURE (pi. 76).
H. -2 m.
Stiffly upright female figure, of a sixth century type often found in
Rhodes (cf. 7?. A/. WT-zz-rc/Azy, pi. XVII). The unbound hair which is
