serving the outline of the nude beneath the drapery, which is indicated by
foids resembling the lines of a drawing. On the type see Dummler in

18. MARSYAS BOUND (pi. 5$).
H. (incl. base and all restorations) 2-66 m., (of torso from lowest point of beard
to groin) -61 m. Marble, Restored (in plaster) : 1. leg from above
knee, r. leg from below knee, feet, cords and Pan's pipe, front of stomach, several
locks of hair and beard, 1. breast and pectoral muscle up to arm, part of r. shoulder
and pectoral muscle, the branch to which the hands are tied together with cords and
most of hands and lower arms, though the back of the 1. hand is antique. There are
also several places where the marble is broken and repaired with plaster. The tree
trunk is restored in stone.

Marsyas is depicted as hanging from the branch of a tree to which
his wrists and ankles are fastened with ropes so that his feet give no sup-
port. The moment chosen is that which immediately precedes the flaying
inflicted as a penalty for his failure in the musical contest with Apollo.
The pose is confirmed by the other copies in Florence, Berlin, the Louvre,
and other museums. The body is so fragmentary that it is difficult to
