SALA DELLE AQUILE 3, 4—SALA DEGLI ARAZZI 1 63

On a nude bust, which extends to the shouiders and breasts, the
head of a man turned and looking slightly to the r. Abundant hair
worked with the chisel in a confused mass of locks which partly cover the
ears and fall low over the forehead. Eyebrows, moustache, and whiskers
incised; iris and pupil rendered. Beard worked in short close curls and,
as is usual at the date of this head, extending for some distance under the
chin. The features show a slight resemblance to those of Gallienus, and
the bust dates from his reign. Fair work of the third century, weakened
by modern polish.
Provenance unknown.
Armellini, i. 41, 2.
4. EAGLE (pi. 7).
H. (total) -603 m., (plinth) -024 m., Br. (max.) .38 m. Luna marble. Unre-
stored. Back finished with six-pronged claw-chisel, except for neck and upper quarter
of 1. wing, on which feathers are indicated, and for lower half of edge of 1. wing at back,
which is tooled smooth. Edge of r. wing and plinth below tooled away vertically.
Eagle, with wings half spread: head turned up to r.
It appears to have been the attribute of a statue of Zeus (Reinach, i.
188. 1 ; iQO. i.) or of an Emperor, the r. wing adjoining the throne or
drapery; or it may have been grouped with Ganymede in one of several
types (e. g. Reinach, i. 197. 1.), in which case the smooth surface on edge
of 1. wing would be where the boy's hand rested. The thinness of plinth
seems to indicate that it was let into the main base.
Rough but effective work, the impressionism of which suggests the
Flavian period.
Provenance unknown, recently brought from the Antiquario
Comunale.
5. EAGLE (pi. 35).
See on GG/J. 30.

statue, surface of inserted portion being finished with claw-chisel, except for upper
edge in front, which has finer finish. Under-surface of front end of wig on r., which
is also smooth, bears seven small punch-marks, probably to hold cement with which
the joint was made. Tip of nose and front end of wig on 1. broken. Oval hollow in
fore part of bird's skin above forehead : circular hole (diam. .013 m., depth -ot m.)
in centre of circular smooth surface (diam. .033 m.) on top of head : in each case for
attributes, probably of metal. Eyes (now missing) were also inserted in different
material.
Female head turned very slightly to r.: neck inclined to 1. Face a
broad oval. Cheeks full. Eyebrows arched, with ridge of flesh above
upper lids. The horizontal of the eyes slope downwards towards
the nose. The eyes themselves tend to be prominent, and are narrow,
with lower lids almost straight. Corners of mouth turned upwards.
Chin receding. Ears large, and set high in the head, as in genuine
Egyptian statues and mummy-cases.
