APPENDIX
INVENTORIES OF THE PALAZZO DEI CONSERVATORI
IN the first volume of this catalogue some account was given (p. 377)
of the inventories of the contents of the Palazzi Capitolini contained in
the Archivio Storico Capitolino, Cred. iv, vol. 60, and those which con-
cerned the Palazzo Nuovo (Museo Capitolino) were printed as Appendix V.
In the following pages will be found the substance of those inventories
which refer to the contents of the Palazzo dei Conservatori; but in order
to save space and avoid unnecessary duplication the original contents of
each room at the date of the earliest inventory are first enumerated, the
additional pieces first mentioned in later inventories are added under their
respective dates, and changes in the description or collocation of the
objects are given in foot-notes. The first inventory (A. & C. iv. 60, f. 3 ff.)
is of the year 1627; those of 1634 (f. 13 ff.) and 1636 (f. 19 ff.) show
little difference, but that of 1641 (f. 24 ff.), which is repeated with slight
change in 1646 (f. 28 ff.), shows a number of additions, and others
belonging to the years 1648, i6gi and 1633 are noted on f. 33. In the
Inventory of 1663 (f. 35 ff.) it is noted that the transference of a number
of statues to the Nuovo Palazzo (cfl vol. i, p. 377) took place when
Onofrio Lanza was Maestro di Casa, i. e. between June 20, 1646, when
Lanza signed the inventory of that date, and March 16,1648, when Michele
Bongiunta signed his receipt on taking his place. We have inventories
of August 8, 1687 (f. 42 ff.) and December 14, 1692 (f. gi ff.); the latter
contains for the first time a list of the statues, &c., preserved in the
Cortile. Similar inventories were made in 1697, 1698 and 1706, and
the last is practically identical with those of July ir, 1709, and June 2,
1713, preserved in WoAzrz'&JAz &2* rogz'A 07*2)72723/2'
<772722' vol. x, c. 177 and 1711-19, vol. xi, c. 28, which were
kindly placed at Dr. Ashby's disposal by Senatore Lanciani. The inven-
tory of January g, 1723 (f. 80ff.) contains the statues added to the
collection by Clement XI VcT*/. 3, g, 6, &z/a &/A 1, 2); and
in that of September 1729 (f. 90^) we find the bronze geese which give
their name to one of the rooms for the first time. Our next inventory
belongs to 1804 (f. 130 ff.); there are few additions, but a good deal of
rearrangement.
This is followed by the brief description of the collections in the earlier
editions of Tofanelli's description of the Museum (cf. vol. i, p. 20), to
which references are given where necessary.* An inventory of De-
cember 31, 1844, preserved in yLA.C., Cred. xx, vol. 63, f. 163 ff.,
differs but slightly from Tofanelli's later editions, and a MS. list compiled
in 1872 by Giovanni Smith adds very little to the last edition (1846) of
Tofanelli.
