8. Cirpus OF SABINIUS XANTHIPPUS (pi. 6).
H. 1.34 m., Br. (at base)-31m. Pentelic marble. Unrestored. The surface is
much defaced.
The inscription, within a rectangular frame with plain mouldings,
is enclosed by fluted Corinthian pilasters on high plinths. Above, between
the capitals, are two nude cupids holding a garland with ribbons, above
which is a head of Medusa. On the r. and 1. side, similarly enclosed by
Corinthian pilasters, are a A<?Ar<2 and an respectively. On the top
of the cippus in front is a crouching lioness within a cave giving suck
to a cub. A second cub is on her back, and a third to her 1. On
the r. side is an owl, with wings outspread and claws holding a serpent,
which rears up its head to attack the bird. On the 1. is an owl to r.
facing a serpent. Both these scenes are in segmental frames, of which
the r. and 1. corners respectively are decorated with half-palmettes, and
the 1. and r. defaced.

9. DECORATIVE TRIPOD (pi. 8).
PI. 1-32 m., diam. of top -40 m. Pentelic marble. Unrestored.
The tripod is joined at the back to a block of marble with a smooth
surface on the r. and 1. sides. The legs of the tripod are in the form of
fluted pilasters, decorated with acanthus and floral tendrils. They end
below in four lion's claws. The capital of the central leg has a female
mask in relief, with eye-pupils hollowed. Between the legs are two
fluted engaged columns. That to the r. is cylindrical and crowned by an
Ionic capital, that to the 1. square and surmounted by a defaced capital.
Above the Ionic column is a rectangular panel with a tragic and comic
mask in relief; above the other is a similar panel with a defaced relief on
the r. of a Maenad (?), holding up to 1. a mutilated object to a Satyr (?),
who starts back to 1. Above each panel is a garland. On the body of
the bowl of the tripod which appears above the garlands are two heads
of Medusa in relief. A floral pattern runs round the visible part of the
lip of the bowl. The top of the tripod is decorated with a double maeander.
Ordinary Roman work.
Found on the Aventine in front of the church of the Priorato di
Malta, together with a fragment of an architrave, now in the garden of
the Antiquarium.

Slab of marble, with relief of three lictor's fasces set vertically. The
fasces are composed of a bundle of rods and the axe. From the rods
a central stick projects at the lower end to form a handle. The rods
are tied together by a continuous strap wound thrice round the fasces at
