(p. 126). The dress occurs not infrequently on the Column of Trajan
(e. g. Cichorius, ZE? AT/zb/s- Zz'q/hzzyZzzA, pi. XXII), and is also found
on the Column of Marcus Aurelius. It is probable that the present work
was the keystone of an arch in the Forum of Trajan.
From the Cesi Collection, mentioned by Aldrovandi (p. 126). See

II. *66 m., L. .88 m. Parian marble. Restored: part of moulding above on r.
Rectangular panel with moulding similar to no. 6 a. Within is an
elaborate trophy of arms and armour. There are two cuirasses, one with
overlapping scales, the other with shoulder-straps, sash, and tendril orna-
ment. There are also four oval shields with high bosses; three are
ornamented with tendrils, one with a pattern of net-work. The other
prominent objects are three helmets, all much damaged, a bow and quiver,
an axe, and a sword—the hilt is broken—in its scabbard.
Drawn by Pierre Jacques, f. 2 <5z'r.
Armellini, ii. 13/.
7. STATUE OF BARBARIAN CHIEF (pi. 6).
Statue of barbarian chief, similar in dress and pose to no. 3, except
that he is turned half 1., that his mantle is not fringed, and that his arms are
cut short at the elbow. The hair, moustache, and beard are arranged in
straggling locks instead of curls, and the hair is parted over the forehead.
The type is more savage than the other.
For provenance and discussion see on no. 3.
