9. HEADLESS STATUETTE OF MUSE (?) (pi. 90).
II. .74 m. Luna marble. Unrestored.
Headless figure of a woman leaning with 1. arm on a square pillar
and crossing her 1. leg over the r. She is dressed in a tunic which has
fallen off the r. shoulder, and a mantle which is arranged in a thick fold
below the breasts and falls in a mass over the pillar. The r. arm is
broken above the elbow, the 1. at the waist.
Superficial work. Possibly a grave-statue.

10. ROMAN FEMALE PORTRAIT-BUST (pi. 8$).
H. (head only) .27 m., (with bust) .64 nr. Luna, marble. Restored : nose, edge
of r. ear, 1. eyebrow, tip of 1. ear, narrow patch on neck in front. The head has been
cleaned and worked over; the bust is ancient but does not belong to it.
On a draped bust is the head of a woman whose hair is waved and
gathered up from the neck on to the crown, where it is arranged in
elaborate coils in the fashion of Faustina the elder. Iris and pupil
indicated.
Poor work of the Antonine period.

11. ROMAN FEMALE PORTRAIT-BUST (pi. 89).
H. *58 m. Luna marble. Restored : nose, piece on neck : several patches on
the drapery of the bust, which is ancient but does not belong.
On a bust of the third century A. D., draped in tunic and mantle, is
the head of a young woman to front. Her hair is parted in the middle
and waved to each side, covering all but the lobes of the ears. At the
back it is arranged in a simple knot.
Moderate work of the Julio-Claudian period.

12. ARCHITECTURAL FRAGMENT WITH GROTESQUE MASK
(pi. 92).
H. -2C) m., Br. .34 m. Pentelic marble. Unrestored.
Fragment of relief with a grotesque mask within a floral border.
The mask has the high head-dress (oy/<os) of tragic masks, eyes with
hollows to indicate the iris, and lips widely parted.
Rough work.

13. SLEEPING EROS (pi. 92).
L. -48 m., Br. -343 m. Parian marble. Unrestored.
A nude Eros with wings spread lies on his 1. side on a lion's skin.
A strap runs from his r. shoulder. His r. arm is thrown over his head,
in his 1. hand he holds two poppies. Below the tail of the skin is a lizard.
Above are a bow and a quiver with a strap which make a pillow for the
sleeper. He has curly hair knotted above the forehead.
A common type (cf. GW/. g8, &c.).
Ordinary work.
Found near S. Vitale.
