GALLERIA SUPERIORE VI. 43-46 349
Traces of purple on eyes, hair, wreath, and egg-and-tongue moulding, light red on
flesh.
Above, egg-and-tongue moulding; below, male head and neck
facing. The head is bent slightly to the 1., the chin raised, the mouth
half open and the eyes staring as if in terror. The abundant thickly-
clustering hair is covered by a garland of vine-leaves.
The slab is to be completed by two other busts of similar type,
one on each side of that preserved. For the arrangement compare a
similar slab at Vienna (Von Rohden, Taf. XXXI).
Augustan period.
Provenance unknown.
Von Rohden, Abb. 61.
44. RECOGNITION OF THESEUS (not illustrated).
-13 m. x-iym. Preserved: only the torso of Theseus to below knee. No traces
of colour.
The subject represented was the recognition of Theseus by his
father. In the centre sat Theseus wearing sandals and a cloak, and girt
with a sword. Aegeus was in the act of rushing forward and snatching
from his lips the cup of poison he was about to drink. Behind Theseus
stood Medea and behind the king his handmaids.
He sits facing r. His body is bare but for a cloak, the end of which
rests on his r. shoulder. It fell in heavy folds behind his back, passed
round the 1. hip and covered the 1. thigh. A sword-hilt is seen in front
of the body on the r. The 1. arm hangs down; the r. rests on the thigh
and holds the cup ; the r. knee is strongly bent with the foot drawn
back.
Middle of f rst century A. D.
Provenance unknown.
Cf. Von Rohden, p. 100 f. There is no other example of this group with
Theseus turned to the r., but his attitude is identical, wMZ'a/A with the
examples figured.

45. FRAGMENT; subject unidentified (not illustrated).
.08 m- x -13 m. Missing : head, and feet, and 1. forearm.
Nude male fgure with 1. arm on a support and the r. bent across the
chest with the hand on the 1. shoulder. Traces of cloak on 1. shoulder.
First century A.n.
Provenance unknown.
46. FRAGMENT; subject unidentified (not illustrated).
.18 m.x-18 m. Preserved : fgure down to waist, lower part of spear, and r.
arm except elbow. No traces of colour.
A powerfully-built male fgure stands facing, with head turned to
his r. He wears a crested helmet and a mantle on the 1. shoulder. The
r. arm hangs down, the 1. is bent at the elbow and holds a spear (P).
Behind him is an arch ; on his r. a part of a draped fgure.
Middle of f rst century A. D. (?)-
Provenance unknown.
