nocephalus (8 r), paranatellonta of Aries and Taurus13. In séven out of the examined
manuscripts there appears the constellation of Arrow (Sagitta), paranatellonta of Leo
and Scorpio, presented in the Florian Psalter (8 r) as a figure with a long arrow 14.
Panther (paranatellonta of the decanates of Aries, Libra, Scorpio, Capricorn, Aquarius
and Gemini, 9 r) appears in the Luttrell Psalter15. The zodiac sign of Leo (paranatellonta
of Leo, 11 r, 28 v, 56 r, ßO v) appears in ten out of the examined psalters and hooks of
hours 16. With the same frequency the image of the bird with the human head appears
(Ouphisit, 11 r), paranatellonta of Cancer17. There appears-also a constellation of Eagle
(Aquila, 11 v, 20 r, fig. 74), with the spread wings as paranatellonta of Sagittarius 1S.
The birds (2 r, 3 r, 5 r, 6 v, 8 r, 9 r, 16 v, 17v, 23 r, 28 v, 30r, 32r, 44r, 50 v, 51 v, 59r, 60v),
however, appear very often on the pages of many psalters and their species can be diffe-
rentiated in a lesser or greater degree 19. From the point of view of astrology their meaning
can be double. They can represent one out of three constellations in the shape of a bird —
Raven, Swan or Eagle- but they may also stand for different planets, signs of zodiac
or moon nodes and such identification is presented in Liber èxperimentarius by Bernard
Silvestris20. The images of a running dog with an appearanée similar to Wolf (Lupus)
also occur frequently, paranatellonta of Gemini (11 v, fig. 74)21. In the Luttrell Psalter
and in the French Psalter in Cambridge (Ee 4, 24) as well as in the Mary of Pembroke
Psalter there appears a man with the paws of a turtle protruding a tongue (15 v, fig. 75,
paranatellonta of Cancer)22. Particularly common in psalters are the images of naked
figures sitting on animals and visible from behind in very complicated poses which
denote the degrees of a sign. A naked man on a lion with the ensign in his hand (15 v,
fig. 75) — degree and paranatellonta of Leo sign appears on the pages of the six examined
psalters, among others the Rutland and the Luttrell23. The Gohlet (16 v) presented in
the Florian Psalter in a different way then in the illustrated astrological treatises, with
a human figure lying inside (probably paranatellonta of Leo), is similar to the miniatures
in the Gorleston Psalter and St. Omer Book of Hours; in the last manuscript there are two
human figures lying by the chalice 24. In the same book of hours there appears a winged
ape (16 v), paranatellonta of Capricorn 2S. The figure with a stick (17 v), paranatellonta of
the decanates of Sagittarius or Taurus, is painted in the Bohun Psalter and the Hours
of Mary of Pembroke ?-6. Quite frequent, appearing in eight out of the examined psalters,
is the Lute constellation (Lyra), paranatellonta of Cancer y Gemini, Libra and Virgo,
as a man playing the viol27. Raven pecking a naked mail, paranatellonta of Sagittarius
