Kingdom of Leon when he should be dead,
and loyally they tried but could only
secure a better compromise with Castile
for the poor ladies, and found themselves
bereft of castles of their own in consequence.

S. James now, in the thirteenth century,
was the protector of travellers and the
guardian of souls, as well as the warrior.
All the functions that he fulfilled in his
own land of Galicia may be perceived,
though less clearly, wherever his Order
appeared.
The Master of Santiago had been stand-
ard bearer at Las Navas. In 1224 discord
broke out between the knights and the
clerks in the Order, the latter claiming a
tithe of all booty the former brought in:
