Sm. fol., orig. sheep, fine copy with the scarce portr. by Cross (as in No. 155, but now re-
worked). This unauthorised translation of the College of Physicians’ “ Pharmacopoeia ”
which so excited the wrath of that body was orig. issued under the title of “ A Physical Direc-
tory,” &c. The fine condition of this vol. may be due to having been kept in careful hands ;
it has, for instance, the bold signature and notes of Jo. Edwardes, 2|May, 1653, who no doubt
was the M.D. of whom the D.N.B. says there is no trace after 1649.

by small tools of fleur-de-lis and ostrich feathers, the centres occupied by the large feather
crest of the Prince of Wales (afterwards Charles II.) : compare a similar example in the Royal
Library, see Holmes, Windsor Bindings, plate 32, apparently the only specimen at all

copy. 2 devices and many interesting woodcuts of the Astrolabe and other instruments,
including the “ Anemoscopio,” etc. At p. 279, names of all the Winds in Greek, Latin (incl.
Girol. Cardano), Italian, Dutch (Tedeschi), French and Spanish. Best ed., with the 6th part.
Riccardi 589. The device at end was closely copied by J. Wolfe at London 1593 (McK. 298).
This work “ renferme une remarque capitale, dont les meilleurs auteurs ont a tort fait honneur
a Tycho-Brahe, savoir la diminution de l’obliquite de l’ecliptique, deduite de la comparaison
des anciennes observations avec les modernes. Son livre ' Sur TAnemoscope, ’ Bologne, 1578,
contient des faits curieux sur l’histoire de la division des vents.”
