Sm. 8vo, old straight grain blue morocco, blind ornams. g.e., title neatly inlaid, some margins
stained but large and sound with errata and blank at end. First ed. of one of the first books
printed in English against the Pope, and published under the name of Richard Brightwell.
The 5th book from this press. Sayle 6272 (the 2nd example of this press in U. Lib.Cambr.).
B.M. copy is mutilated (Cat. 272). The “ Antithesis” is from the German of Luther or
Melanchthon, cf. Murray German Catal. 255. The Britwell copy sold for £10. 5s. by auction :
a copy recently priced £12 12s.

Sm. fol., 4 vols in 2, 17th Cent, calf, full gilt backs, 2 or 3 end margins strengthened, part of
blank margin cut off one leaf, loss of 2 or 3 letters on another : large sound and very desirable
copy with 3 orig. blanks and leaf of Register in Vol 3 : the rare Fourth edition, especially so
being uniform throughout with the large device of Verard on each title and at end of Vols 1
and 4 (6 places in all) : this is seldom the case, most copies being mixed as to publishers, for
the ed. was produced conjointly for Verard, Regnault and Petit: finely printed in lettres
batardes, numerous ornam. initials. Macfarlane, Verard 282. Early large armorial ex-libris
in 1st vol. Numerous MS. notes, pedigrees, coats of arms, etc., of persons mentioned in text
added in margins and on blanks by one of the early owners whose names, &c., are written
on fly-leaves, viz., Che livre chy apertien a Monsr. de Rassenghien, 1527 : and in same hand,
Adolf Vilain contre ches turs ira Vailant de son cors et dieu laimera (this owner was killed on
the field of battle against the Turks), Sans reproche, Vylain, 1550 : Pour ung espoir, Rasseng-
hien : Pense m’y faict, Isenghien, 1583 : De Herselle : &c.

63), Minister to Augustus III., king of Poland : a rare stamp, as the whole of the Comte de
Bruhl’s library (62,000 vols) was bought by Prince Xavier de Saxe, and afterwards passed
to the Public Library of Dresden. (Guigard II. 98). J. F. Vandevelde’s in 1801. Seyssel’s
work, de Repub. Galliae & Regum officiis, is seldom met with. See also COMINES, ante.
