during the Minority of fames VI. Letter Signed “James
Regent.” 1 p. folio. Holyrood, 2 Nov. 1573. To Queen
Elizabeth. About the loss of the ship Good Fortune
wilfully run underseas by the ship Undersoul. £25
“ Pleis it youre Maiestie. Uponn the lamentable complaint recevvit
be Johnne Lovell and utheris of the toun of Oundie gude and
obedient subiectis to the king my souerane ; I am constrenit to
move thair cause to youre Maties self, how in december last thair
ship namyt the gude fortonn inward from Burdeaulx towards
Scotland ladin with wynis and other merchandices, as she stayed
at ane anker, in the raid at Wintertonn ness was be the ship
undersoull of Robert Wardell of Kingston upponn hull, youre
Majesties subiect, wilfullie ron under seas, and ship with hir
lardnyng and one of the mariners perisht and loist : for redresse
yrof [thereof] the compliners has maid sute in Youre Maiesties
Court of the admiralitie bot wer frustrate therein, the inhabitantis
of Kingstonn pretending to be exemit from the heich admiralls
Juresdiction, and so the perfellowes behuiffit then to returne.
Beseching thairfoir youre Matie. to direct the mater to be examinat
befoir my Lordis of youre counsall, with sic convenient and favor-
able expeditionis as the cause meritis : quhawthroes the pure men
already depanptrat (?) throw this losse be not further dampnifeit
wth unnecessary attendence, as I sail schaw my gudewill and
affectioun to caus yor hienes subiectis be semblably answerit wth
simar [similar] Justice in sic suces as they may casuallie have
wthin this cuntrie. And thus maist humbly taking my leif
Comittis yor Maiestie in the protectionn of Almichtie god At
halyrudehous the second of Novembre 1573.
“ Youre Maiesties Maist humbly to comand
wth all Lauchfull service.”
Addressed : “ To the quenis maiestie of england.”
Mary Queen of Scots resigned her Crown to her infant son,
James VI, in July 1567. At the time this letter was written,
•Mary was a prisoner in the Earl of Shrewsbury’s palace at Sheffield.

The description of the Hoopoe bird with the drawing of the bird
superimposed and Edwards’ note, “ This bird was shot in the
neighbourhood of London in August 1759. . . . The green outline
here drawn is of the natural size of the bird and was traced round
the dead bird layd on the paper.”
