The Edition Originale Complete. Very tall copy, measuring
251 millimetres in height by 185 millimetres. This valuable
edition comprises besides the First and Second Books, the
Premiere Edition Originale of the Third Book and is the
First Complete Edition of Montaigne’s Immortal “ Essais."
This copy was originally in the possession of Alexandre Le Jay
(17th century)—his signature is on the title and his autograph
marginalia occurs throughout. Later in the 17th century this
superb copy belonged to Claude Le Bas de Montargis, who became
State Councillor in 1722. His ex-libris is inside the front cover.
