wood bearing the inseription have been let in. The whole surface
is rather highly polished and appears at one time to have been
covered with black paint, most of which has been removed except
in the interstices of the carving such as the fur, the folds of the
sleeves etc. The pilasters at the sides are decorated with a scale
pattern rather roughly done with a punch, which suggests that there
was perhaps an original panel of foliage ornament which was later
removed. On the window sill is a tablet signed roughly with initials
M A, M R, or M P. The back has a plain matt boxwood surface. In

the middle are three incised concentric circles enclosing a sunk panel
showing a shield carved in relief with arms (a fleur-de-Iys in base a
crescent); above the shield and at either side are carved the initials
D.Z:G.
