A special place on the itinerary of voyagers and in their travelogues was oc-
cupied by Versailles - the court of Le Roi-Soleil,but also an extensive, constantly
expanded, luxurious residential complex filled with sophisticated collections,
top-class works of painting, sculpture and artistic craftsmanship, surrounded by
exquisite gardens. In the Baroque era, the trip to “foreign countries” was the last
stage of the intellectual formation of the young elite of the Polish-Lithuanian
Commonwealth, and France and its Capital enjoyed the incontestably leading
place in the grand tour (or Kavalierstouf) Circuit, an educational journey under-
taken in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries by the nobility and magnates
all over Europę.2 According to the educational canon of the time, the purpose
of the trip was not so much regular academic education, but rather the acquisi-
tion of good manners, experience, getting to know foreign countries, and a visit
to the most splendid manors and residences, among which Versailles undoubt-
edly belonged. In travel reports, Paris was described as “the theatrum of nearly
all of Europę,”3 and a visit to the court of Louis xiv was an indispensable part
of the program of each educational journey In September 1670, Jan Kazimierz
Denhoff, a recipient of Parisian education, explained this necessity to his father:
“Król francuski wyjeżdża teraz aż ku Lyonowi, zaczym trudno go teraz i widzieć
i witać, aż powróci za pięć niedziel, bywszy zaś w Paryżu a króla nie widzieć i tak
odjechać, byłoby to coś niesłychanego [...].” [The French king is going away now,
to as far as Lyon, therefore it shall be difficult to see him and greet him until he
returns five Sundays henceforward; and surely, being in Paris and leaving without
having seen the king would be unimaginable [...].]4
