the course of their education unanimously emphasized the need to visit the court
of Louis xiv in Versailles. The Grand Marshal of the Crown, Stanisław Herakliusz
Lubomirski, while writing down his recommendations for his sons of Teodor and
Franciszek who were going to Paris in 1699, emphasized the necessity of the visit
to the royal court there.5 Similarly, in 1682, Hetman Stanisław Jabłonowski wrote
to his sons Jan Stanisław and Aleksander Jan, who were about to embark on their
Kavalierstour under the care of Jan Michał Kossowicz, the Sword-bearer of Czer-
nihów: “Przy tern wszytkim skoro się nauczą języka, niechaj bywają podczas
i w Wersalu u króla Jmci francuskiego.” [After they have learned the language, let
them also visit His Majesty the French King at Versailles.]6 Later, the Hetmans
sons drew on their own experiences from their youth to prepare travel guidelines
for the next generations of the family; already in 1728, Jan Stanisław Jabłonowski
drew up instructions for his nephew Józef Aleksander, in which he invariably
advised: “W Wersalu bywać często” [To visit Versailles often] / Similarly, Stanisław
Mateusz Rzewuski, in a letter to the tutor of his younger son Wacław joyfully
referred to the planned visit of his descendant to the French court: “Do Wersalu
żeście WMść w Święta jechać mieli i tam się królowi francuskiemu prezentować
mieli, bardzom z tej nowiny kontent, daj Boże, ażeby syn mój, przejrzawszy się
w dobrej publicznego kraju manierze tejże samej nabierać umiał [...]” [That you
should be going to Versailles at Christmas and be presented to the French King,
I am exceedingly content with this news. God willing that my son, having observed
the polite public manner of that country, might adopt the same [...].]8
In the years 1661-1715, Versailles was visited by almost all young noblemen and
magnates who travelled abroad, and newcomers from the Polish-Lithuanian Com-
monwealth were not inferior in this respect to young representatives of the elites
of all Europę, for whom the visit to Versailles was an important point of every
grand tour.9 Some of the traveller’s accounts, however, allow only the confirma-
tion of the fact of the youths presence in the royal residence, without offering
additional details. It is known, for example, that in 1685 the pałace of Louis xiv
