L. M. Richter. French sixteenth Century portraiture with special reference etc. 367
sufficiently investigated. Yet, already the few examples we have noted enable us to
come to the following conclusion: that the peculiar style of the French sixteenth Cen-
tury „Crayons" which so much fascinate amateurs and art-students at the present
mornent, could not have been imported, as hitherto generally supposed, by Jean
Clouet, but has on the contrary much more probably originated on French soil. For,
when Jean Clouet came to Tours, the home of the great Fouquet, he probably found
many works of this great master to guide him there. But on the other hand, the
foreign artist had no doubt brought over with him, something of the art of Holbein,
which he adapted to, and amalgamated with French elegance and grace in his
„Crayons". Subsequently under Francois Clouet, born and bred in France, that
peculiar art of French portraiture attained the final development which we perceive
in the portrait of Pierre Qutte, an acquisition for which we heartily congratulate
the „Amis du Louvre".
