A comparison of the figures, especially the percentages for the graves of Dyn. Ill and Dyn. IV, shows
clearly the essential changes which were taking place in the burial position during that time at Naga-’d-
Der. The contracted position on the left side still prevails (95-2% in Dyn. Ill and 94*9% in Dyn. IV).
The degree of contraction has altered very little, for the four graves with hcsk bodies (10-2%) were of the
later graves; but it may be said that the half-contracted position on the side had begun here in Dyn. IV.
At Giza it was completely established in the time of Sneferuw for the court burials. On the other hand,
the orientation had changed definitely towards the ‘north’. In Dyn. Ill, 84-6% of the bodies lay with
their heads ‘south’ and 3-8% with their heads ‘north’, while in Dyn. IV, 38-5% lay heads ‘south’ and
51-3 % heads ‘north’. At Giza, in Dyn. IV, the orientation ‘N’ was the regular rule (see also type vi).
The following lists give the small graves of types vi a-f (Dyn. V-VI) with their orientation and
burial position:
Type vi a. Small graves, long open pit (all but three on map iii):
