LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS AND SYMBOLS
‘N’> ‘E’, ‘S’, ‘W’ designate the local cardinal points. The Egyptians in all times have taken the directions from the
local course of the river and do not use the astronomical cardinal points. At Naga-’d-Der the local
‘N’ is about 37 degrees west of the magnetic north.
Designation of tomb and grave types:
IV A = Third Dynasty stairway tomb.
IV B — Third Dynasty stairway tomb with irregular stairway.
IV C — Third Dynasty stairway tomb with stepped shaft.
iv a = Open pit with c.b. well, roofed with stone slabs, plastered with mud.
iv b = Open pit with rubble well, or sunk well, roofed with stone slabs.
iv c = Open pit with burial receptacle, packed with rubble or stone slabs and covered with stones or stone slabs
and mud plaster.
iv d = Open pit with side chamber, blocked with c.b. or rubble.
bd = Boulder; and indicates that the grave of the type mentioned is beside, or in the case of iv d partly under,
a large boulder.
iv e — Small stepped-shaft grave similar to type IV C.
V A = Fourth Dynasty shaft grave with square shaft and square chamber.
V B = Fourth Dynasty shaft tomb with square shaft and oblong chamber.
VC = Fourth Dynasty shaft tomb with long rectangular shaft.
v a = Open pit with closed corbel vault.
v b = Open pit with c.b. arch.
vc = Open pit with shaft and chamber constructed of c.b. and stone.
v d (1), (2), (3) = small tombs of the forms of V A, B, C.
v e — Open pit, with long shaft and long chamber.
