THE CHRONOLOGY OF CEM. N 500-900

vi, c ord, which are on the ‘southern’ slope, have their chambers on the ‘north’ end of the pit; but in
map iii CD along the line between 2 and 3, for a short distance the slope pitches towards the ‘north’
and along this reversed slope the graves of type vi c and vi d have their chambers on the ‘southern’ end:

Farther ‘east’ comes N 768 in the depression with its chamber to the ‘N’ and then follows, 4 m. farther
‘E’, N 769 with chamber to ‘S’:

These examples make it clear that the tombs of types vi c, d were excavated with the pits on the lower
part of the slope and the chambers under the higher part of the slope. In the ‘E-W’ chambers the body
was usually laid in the chamber with the head in the back end (that is, in the end away from the pit)
‘E’ or ‘W’ as the case might be; but in the one exception, N 850, the head lies towards the pit (‘W’)
and was plundered. In the ‘N-S’ graves with chamber on the ‘S’, the body always lies with the head
towards the pit, that is, ‘N’.
The graves along the two slopes of the higher ridge which runs ‘east’ from mastaba N 610 and N 764
confirm this conclusion. Those on the ‘southern’ slope have the chambers on the ‘N’ and those on the
‘northern’ slope have chambers on the ‘S’ end of the pit. The graves on the ‘northern’ slope are:

‘East’ of N 754, the slope alters and the position of the chamber changes back to normal.
There remains the small knoll in iii B 2-3 with two graves on the ‘N’ slope having ‘S’ chambers,
two graves on the ‘S’ slope having ‘N’ chambers, and one ‘E-W’ grave with ‘E’ chamber.
