THE CHRONOLOGY OF CEM. N 500-900

its history

The orientation appears entirely erratic.
As the next step, I take the six graves of this type with lesk
and hcsk burials, because the burial position makes it probable that they belong to the late period. None
of them contain any objects:

This series of graves is scattered over map iii CD 2-3, in the midst of graves of types vi a-d. They might
be slightly older graves carefully avoided by the grave-diggers of the types vi a-d, or they might be
contemporaneous, made in order with the other graves as they stand. In my opinion, the burial positions
are decisive and these graves were roughly contemporaneous with those around them. The short
wooden box, usually packed with rough limestone slabs, is distinctly reminiscent of the older types
iv c and v f; but such boxes with the similar lesk burials were found in the limestone rubbish thrown
out from the rock-cut cliff tombs of Dyn. V-VI and can be proved to occur after Dyn. VI. The diversity
of the orientation is to be noted (2 ‘N’, 2 ‘E’, 1 ‘S’, and 1 ‘W’) as marking a difference from the regularity
of the orientation of types iv c and v f.
There remain five graves of type vi e, which have bodies in the older burial positions, esk and tcsk.
These all lie farther ‘west’ in map iii D 3 and 4, E 2 and 3; and are probably all of Dyn. V or even
early Dyn. V:
