N 579. Map, ii GH 6; type, vb; photos C 4005, 4602-4604, 4608-4611, 9382-9384, 9834-9841, B 9779, 9780;
fig- z39-
Small mastaba, c.b. retaining walls with chip filling; 200 X 180 cm. and about 30 cm. high; in the ‘west’ wall
two simple niches of which the ‘southern’ is slightly larger; niches roofed with stone slabs as in N 578.
N 579 is built against the ‘south’ wall of N 577 while the niched front of N 579 itself was covered by N 578.
Z/y/ /39
Thus N 579 is earlier than N 478 and later than N 577, but all are of the same generation. Mastaba probably
plastered on top. Axis of mastaba, 440 east of south.
Burial chamber: roughly rectangular pit in gravel, 132 X 56-61 cm. and 115 cm. deep. The pit was lined with
three courses of c.b. laid on the long edge; roofed by an arch of three bricks; all bricks laid with mud plaster
and plaster over vault.
Burial: about 10 cm. of gravel laid in bottom of grave; then a coarse mat was laid down with its fibres running
‘N’-‘S’; on the mat, a tightly contracted burial on its left side, head ‘north’; axis of burial, 530 west of north;
about head, neck, and hands, remains of cloth, apparently a garment; adult female.
Objects: behind the head was a wooden box, No. 1; inside the box were Nos. 2-5, ivory comb, diorite cup,
ivory ring, and beads; on the left wrist, two ivory bracelets, Nos. 6, 7; in the filling of the pit above the arch,
Nos. 8, 9, 10:
1. Wooden box, measuring outside, 20 cm. long by 8 cm. wide and over 13 cm. high; the boards were 9 mm.
thick and had been coated with a thin layer of white plaster on both inside and outside; on one end were
traces of colour, three broad vertical stripes. The wood had decayed and the method of construction
was not recovered.
Inside the box, No. 1:
2. Ivory comb, with two bearded men back to back on the upper edge; h. 5-1 cm.; width 3-5 cm.; length of
teeth 1 cm.; photos C 8786, 9855.
3. Diorite-gneiss, small cup with external rim; type XI c (2); diam. 4-8 cm.; photo C 9849, 2/2; fig. 126 a.
4. Ivory, two small rings (ear-rings ?); diam. 1-9 cm.; diam. of section 0-3 cm.; photo C 9856.
5. Beads, large lot—blue-glazed, cylindrical, short cylindrical, and ring-beads; carnelian, cylindrical,
barrel-shaped, and ring-beads; beryl, cylindrical; and one amulet, a blue-glazed frog-, photo C 9856.
