The title of this volume, " An Account
of the Egyptian Papyri in the Collection
of Lord Amherst of Hackney" sufficiently
explains its purpoi"t.
I wish here to acknowledge my sincerest
thanks to Lord and Lady Amherst, for
having allowed me to delay the publica-
tion of this book for many months. Its
preparation has required much preliminary
study, and has necessitated my reading
through most of the ancient documents
October 1st, 1899.
already published, as well as many of those
preserved in the Museums of Europe and
Egypt, which are, as yet, unpublished.
The proofs have been read through by
my friend Wilhelm Spiegelberg, Professor
of Egyptology in the University of
Strassburg, but, of course, he is in no
way responsible for any errors that may
be found in the work; to him I wish to
express my gratitude for much help and
many valuable suggestions.
