of a — ? field, my husband sIimI be master of
them; he shall get their | price (rip-v) from my
brethren and shall give it as an offering (irpoa-
<$>opa). And further, as to the chattels (o-Kevv)
which have come to me from my father, I swear
to God Almighty (iravTOKparcop) that I will not
give (or, am not giving) anything of them to my
husband.

There shall no man ever have power to sue | thee
upon any pretext (irpo$acn<s), as follows;
neither (ovre) brother nor (ovre) sister nor (ovre)
any relative (lit. man) at all (o\m) of mine;
neither (ovre) thee nor (oure) any of those that
come after thee, whether (icav) it be now or
(icav) at any time. He that | shall dare (ro\/j,av)
to transgress (irapafHaiveiv) this testament ($ia-
0wk7)), whether (ovre) stranger or relative (lit.
man) of mine, concerning my offering (irpoa(popa)
and the oath that I have sworn,—But (aXka)
my husband shall be master over my whole
offering (7rpoartpopa) in the fear | of God; he
shall administer (Siouceiv) it, so that no man
shall have power to administer (Sioixeiv) it
excepting him. I conjure by God Almighty
(■n-avTOKparaip) every governor (ap^av) and
magistrate and every honourable, | worshipful
personage (twto?) who shall happen upon(?)
this testament (BiaGr/Kt]), that he keep it, ac-
cording as (xara) it is written that it is lawful
(efeari) for me to do what pleases me with
mine own.

He that shall dare (roXfiav) to transgress (irapa-
ftaiveiv) it, firstly (+ p.ev), that man shall | not
prosper in anything; but (aXka, pxv) in the first
place (tu7to?), he shall be estranged from the
holy oath which men (lit. they) serve, (from) the
Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost (irvev/ia);
and also he shall pay the amount (A.0709) | of
three ounces (oyyia) of gold and they shall
receive (airaneiv) it from his property (vtto-
<jTaai<;). Afterwards they shall see to it (irapa-
cncevai;eiv) that he conform to the authority of
this testament (SiaBy/crf) and the penalty (read
erriTi/iia) of the magistrate of that time (ica-ipos).
This I testament (BiadrjKr]) therefore (ovv) shall
be established.

I, Tsiblc, that wrote above, do agree to (cn-oi^en/)
this testament (Sia6r]Krj) and to all things that
are written in it; for they have read it to me
(and) I have heard it in the Egyptian (tongue).
I And moreover I have called in (irapaKaXeiv) a
scribe and witnesses besides, that they might
bear witness (fiapTvpeo-Qat) for me (and) I have
published it as it is set forth (m? nrpoKenai,).

I, Andreas, the son of the deceased (fiaKapw)
Phoebamon, am witness.

I I, Georgios, the son of the deceased (/j,aicapio<;)

Samuel, am witness.
I, —?, the son of the deceased (pa/capto?) Pean,

am witness.

I, Theopistos (?), the reader (avayvwaT^i) of (tho
church of) Apa Kyriakos, have written for them,
for I they know (voew) not (how) to write.

I, Severus, the son of the deceased (puxKapios)
Samuel, have written this testament (Siad-rjKT])
with my hand, at (irpo<;) the request (aiT^trt?) of
her who authorized it.

Notes.

1 Unfortunately none of the persons in this text—
magistrates, witnesses, scribe,—recur in other similar
MSS. Twelfth Indictions fall, e.g., in a.d. 729, 744,
759, 774, 789.

3 TCI&Xe occurs also in the 2nd Boulak papyrus.
I Cf. Bodleian, MS. Copt. (P), c. 4, TCI&HX.

■' Read perhaps nA.Tti.2U0C, a frequent name.

4 The npoccbop<4. consists in these texts of the
person of the child to be dedicated, of the person of tho

; testator himself, of cattle, palm-trees, or, as here, of
money.
