Memoriae Donatorum - the Numismatic Exhibition Showcasing
Collections of the Coin Room, National Museum in Kraków
The exhibition entitled Memoriae donatorum. W hołdzie ofiarodawcom Gabi-
net Numizmatyczny Muzeum Narodowego w Krakowie (“Memoriae Donatorum”. In
Memory of Donators: Coin Room of the National Museum in Kraków) was held at
the “Sala pod Kozami” Hall of the Main Building of the National Museum in Kra-
ków, at 1, 3 Maja Av. in Kraków, from May 23 to August 31, 2004.
The exhibition was prepared by the Coin Room assistants on the basis of
a programme drawn up by Elżbieta Korczyńska. Exhibition curators were Jarosław
Bodzek and Bogumiła Haczewska. Design and visual settings were prepared by
Ewa Morzyniec.
The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue with the texts written by
Elżbieta Korczyńska, Jarosław Bodzek, and Bogumiła Haczewska, graphically
designed by Luiza Berdak. It includes forewords by Zofia Gołubiew, Director of 217
the National Museum in Kraków, and Henryk Woźniakowski, President of the As-
sociation of Benefactors of the Emeryk Hutten-Czapski Museum. The publication
contains much information on the donators and their gifts, describes their great
merits, generosity, and contributions to the history and the content of the museum
collection. A particularly significant role was played by the invaluable collec-
tion of Emeryk Hutten-Czapski donated in 1903. It comprised morę than 11,000
items in the form of well-ordered collections of coins, medals, banknotes from
Poland and foreign countries with links to Poland. This exquisite donation raised
the profile of the Coin Room and spurred some other collectors to offer their own
generous gifts.
The catalogue is richly illustrated with yintage photographs of the interior as
well as the building of the mansion housing the Emeryk Hutten-Czapski Museum,
pictures of particularly distinguished donators and photographs of selected numis-
matic exhibits (from the collections of Emeryk Hutten-Czapski, Z. Zakrzewski,
K. Halama, F. Biesiadecki, et al). The exhibition catalogue is complete with a list
of donators beginning from Jan Matejko (in 1884, he had given over a medal issued
in 1789 to commemorate the Four Years’ Sejm of 1788-1792). Among the recent,
and numerous, donations featured in the catalogue are those given over in 2003
(L. Kokociński, M. Kruszyński).
