of Fables. This I mention defignedly: For I could not poiTibly avoid making Ufe of that Work
in {peaking of fome Facts, that are lingular and unparallel'd in Hiftory, which I had already col-
lected there. I hope, however, the Reader will find Things more thoroughly canvaffed in thefe
'Explications, among which I have inferted the Subftance of feveral Dijfertations I had read in the
Academy $ and many Difcoveries which my llluflrious Brethren have communicated to me both in
my Tranjlation and Explications.
When the Copioumefs of Subjects requires long Difcuffions, I hint at the Particulars of molt
Importance, and if any are fond of inquiring farther into them, I direct them to the Authors that
are propereft to fatisfy their Curiofity. A Work which is defigned for univerfal Ufe fhould be
fuited to the Capacity of all Sorts of Readers: And I thought my felf obliged rather to confider
thofe of inferior Rank, than Men of Learning who are above the Need of my Inductions.
