THE ARGUMENT.
The Giants having attempted to render themfelves Mafters of Heaven;
Jupiter buried them under thofe very Mountains, which they heap'd one
upon another, to facilitate the AfTault ; and the Earth having animated
their Blood, forms out of it a cruel and fierce Generation of Men.

Altaque congejios fruxiffe ad fidera montes.
'Turn pater ommpotens mijfo perfregit Oljm-
pum

Perfufam multo natorum fanguine ITerram
Incaluijfe ferunt, caUdumque animaffe cruo-
rern
Et ne nulla ferae firpis monument a manerent,
In faciem vertijje hominum. fed & ilia pro-

Contemtrix Superum , faevaeque a<vidiffima
caedis,
Et violent a fuit: fcires e fanguine natos.
NOr were the Gods themfelves fccure on High,
For now the Giants ftrove to ftorm the Sky:
The lawlefs Brood, with bold Attempt invade
The Gods, and Mountains upon Mountains laid.
But now the Bolt, enragd the Father took,
Olympus from her deep Foundation ftiook;
Their Structure nodded at the mighty Stroke,
And Op's fliatter'd Top o'er PeJion broke.
They in dieir own rebellious Ruins flain,
Gave to their Parent-Earth their Blood again :
She, that fome Monument might ftill be (een,
That fuch a wicked Progeny had been,
Drench'd as fhe was, and reeking in the Strife,
Conceives with Heat,and warms their Blood to Life.
Another Race enfues; but like the Firft,
Hateful of Gods, and by the Gods accurfl;
Full of Revenge, and Cruelty, and Flame ,
Refembling well the Blood from whence they came.
