Pentheus is torn in Pieces by his Mother and the other Bacchants.

Hie oculisiliumcernentemfacraprofanis yio
Prima videt, prima eft mfano concita motu,
Prima fuum mijfo violavit Penthea thyrfo
Mater: Id, geminae, clamavit, adefte fo-
rores.
Ilk aper, in noftris err at qui maximus agris,
Ilk mihi feriendus aper. ruit omnis in u-

*Turba furens. cunBae co'eunt, cunSfaeque fe-
quuntur
Jam trepidum, jam 'verba minus violent a
loquentem,
Jam fe damnantem ,jam fe peccajfe fatentem.
Saucius ilk tamen, Per opem, matertera ,
dixit ,

Spacious Circuit on the Hill there flood,
Level and wide , and skirted round widi

Here the rafh Pentheus , with unhallow'd Eyes,
The howling Dames and myftick Orgies fpies.
His Mother fternly view'd him where he ftood,
And kindled into Madnefs as fhe view'd :
Her leafy Javlin at her Son fhe caft,
And cries, ,,The Boar that lays our Country wafte I
The Boar, my Sifters! Aim the fatal Dart,
And ftrike the brindled Monfter to the Heart,
Pentheus aftonifli'd heard the difinal Sound,
And fees the yelling Matrons gath'ring round j
He fees, and weeps at his approaching Fate,
And begs for Mercy, and repents too late.
Help, help ! my Aunt Autonoe, he cry'd;
„ Remember, how your own Atfaon dy'd.
