THE ARGUMENT.

One of the Mufes repeats to Minerva the Song of Calliope > in anfwer
to the Pierides;in which fhe defcribes the Defeat of the Giant Typhceus,
and Pluto taking a View afterwards of the Mountains in Sicily; where Ve-
nus perfwades her Son to pierce his Heart with One of his Arrows.

FIrft Ceres taught the lab'ring Hind to plow
The pregnant Earth, and cjuickning Seed

Prima dedit leges. Cereris fumus omnia

And with one Bolt reveng'd his Starry World.

Down does Pelorus his right Hand fupprels
Toward Latium, on the left Pachyne weighs.
His Legs are under Lilybaum fpread 3
And ALtna preffes hard his horrid Head.
On his broad Back he there extended lies,
And vomits Clouds of Allies to the Skies.
Oft lab'ring with his Load > at laft he tires,
And fpews out in Revenge a Flood of Fires.
Mountains he ftruggles to o'erwhelm, and
Towns,

Earth's inmoft Bowels quake , and Nature
groans.
