■PHOSES. Book VII. 221

Green Leaves at firft the perifh'd Plant furround,
Which the next Minute with ripe Fruit were
crown'd.

The foaming Juices now the Brink o'er-fwell;
The barren Heath, where e'er the Liquor fell,
Sprang out with vernal Grafi, and all the Pride
Of blooming May — When this Medea fpy'd,
She cuts her Patient's Throat ;th' cxhaufted Blood
Recruiting with her new inchanted Flood;
While at his Mouth, and thro' his op'nmg Wound,
A double Inlet her Infufion found.
His feeble Frame refumes a youthful Air,
A glofly Brown his hoary Beard and HairT;
The meager Palenefs from his Afpeet fled ,
And in its Room (prang up a florid Red,
Thro' all his Limbs a youthful Vigour flies, ~)
His empty'd Art'ries fwcll with freih Supplies: y
Gazing Spectators fcarce believe their Eyes. \
But ALfon is the moil furpriz'd, to find
A happy Change in Body, and in Mind •
In Senfe and Conftitution the fame Man,
As when his Fortieth active Year began.
Bacchus, who from the Clouds this Wonder
view'd,

Finding his Nudes' Age might be renew'd,
Once more her Charms to try, the Queen implor'd:
She Kindly to the Nymphs their Youth reftor'd.

Thus far obliging Love imploy'd her Art j
But now Revenge muft act a tragic Part j
Medea feigns a mortal Quarrel bred
Betwixt her, and the Partner of her Bed j
On this Pretence to Pelias Court (he flies,
Who languilliing with Age and Sicknefs lies.
His thoughtlefs Daughters, with inveigling Wiles,
And well-diflembled Friendfliip, fhe beguiles:
The ftrange Atchievements of her Art fhe tells,
With ALforis Cure, and long on that flie dwells,
Till them to firm Perfwafion foe has won,
The fettic for their old Father may be done:
For him they court her to imploy her Skill,
And put upon the Cure, what Price Hie will.
At ferft llie's mute, and with a grave Pretence
Of Difficulty, holds Win Sufpenfe -y
Then promifes, and bids 'em, from the Fold
Choofe out a Ram, the moll infirm and old;
That fo by Fact their Doubts may be remov'd,
And firft, on him, the Operation prov'd.

A wrcath-horn'd Ram is brought, fo far o'er-
grown

With Years, his Age was to that Age unknown;
Of Senfe too dull the piercing Point to feel,
With fcarce fufiicient Blood to ftain the Steel.
