Left with Surprize his Daughter he fhould fee
Chang'd to a Dove ; her future Deftiny.
She Eyries Lake, and Tempes Field o'cr-ran,
Fam a for the Boy who there became a Swan;
For there inamour'd PhyUius, like a Slave,
Perform'd what Tasks his Paramour would crave.-
For Prefents he had Mountain-Vultures caught,
And from the Defirt a tame Lion brought
Then a wild Bull commanded to fubdue,
The conquer'd Savage by the Horns he drew j
But3 mock'd Co oft, the Treatment he difdains *
And from the craving Boy this Prize detains.
Then thus in Choler the refenting Lad;
Won't you deliver him ? —You'll wifh you had*
Nor fooner {aid, but, in a peevifli Mood,

But dearly the raih Prank his Mother coft >

A Lake, and ftill renown'd with Hyries Name.
Thence to Latona's Ifle, where once were feen,

Far off ihe {aw how old Cephifus mourn'd

Eumelus gaz'd on his wing'd Daughter's Flight.
Her Courfe fhe next diredls o'er Pleurons State,
Where flie's furpris'd with Opkian Combe's Fate:
Their Mother's Death her cruel Sons eftay,
But fudden Plumes the Matron bore away.
Next o'er Cyllene, on her Right, fhe drove; ^
There Menephron his brutal Paflions move >
T5 abufe his Mother with inceftuous Love. J
To Corinth next her harnefs'd Dragons flew,
Where, if what old Tradition tells, be true, £
In former Ages Men from Mufhrooms grew. *
Here when Medea finds her Bed fupply'd,
During her Abfence, by another Bride ;
Straight 'gainft her Rival fhe her Fury turns j
In rolling Flames the hated Palace burns:
Nor could her Rival's Doom her Wrath aftwage *
Nor ftopt at Creon's Family her Rage;
She murders her own Infants, in Defpight
To fiithlefs Jafon, and in Jafons Sight;
Yet e'er his Sword could reach her, up fhe
{brings,
Securely mounted on her Dragons Wines.
From thence to Athens fhe directs her Flight,
Where Phineus, lb renown'd for doing Right;
Where Periphas, and Polypemons Neece,
Soaring with fudden Plumes, amaz'd the Towns
of Greece.
Here ALgeus Co ingaging fhe addreft,
That fir ft he treats her like a Royal Gueft;
Then takes the Sorc'refs for his wedded Wife;
The only Blemilh of his prudent Life.
