OLD DONGOLA 1988-1989

BOUSE PCH.l
by
HLOD2IHIERZ GODLEWSKI

The excavations in Old Dongola conducted by a team from Polish Center of
Archaeology in Cairo have till now concentrated mainly upon sacral architecture,
a fact which is reflected in ten churches and commemorative buildings that have
beenmicovered.
During two last seasons covered by this report house PCH. 1 with its
courtyards was cleared and investigated.!) The house in question covers an area
of 215m!, comprising the dwelling proper (135 m2) and two courtyards adjoining
the complex onthenorthandwest. The house was built in an open area, free of
structures of any kind, and so constituted presumably a frea-standing building
on the northern border of the city agglomeration.
The house PCH. 1 is relatively well preserved with mudbrick walls reaching
aheightabout2.5m. However, numerous alterations and the continued use of the
ruined building as a dwelling in the last stage have destroyed much of the
ground floor and induced various changes and much dismantling. All this greatly
hindered the establishing of the initial plan of the structure. Three phases
were distinguished. The first two are periods of habitation, the last one
reflected the use of the largely ruined structure by squatters. In the first
phase the house was rectangular measuring 14.6 through 9.2 m. (Fig. l)The
layout had been thought out well. The entrance led into a spacious rectangular
vestibule which served as a major passageway inside the building composed of
