POLISH EXCAVATIONS IN NORTH-EAST SYRIA 1968-1989

The region of Syrian Djezirah Ms become in recent years a zone of
particularly intensive archaeological activity. It is mainly due to important
irrigation projects which have been started some years ago in the basin of the
upper Khabur. Since 1986 a team of Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology is
participating in the international Salvage Programme of the Hasake Dams Area.
This programme is organized and supervised by the Syrian Directorate General of
Antiquities and Museums to the officials of which we owe many thanks for their
constant help and support.
In 1986 we have carried out a survey on several archaeological sites in the
vicinity of Hasake.n As a result, two sites situated within Hasake Eastern Dam
Reservoir Area have been selected for further explorations: Tell Abu Hafurand
TeilDjassaal-Gharbi. The regular excavations on both of them have begun in the
spring of 1988 and the second season took place a year later.
TELLDJASSAAL-GHAKBI

TeilDjassaal-Gharbi is situated near Me southern end of the Hasake
Eastern Dam (only 50 m from its western face).2' The mound is about 16m. high
andhasca. 150 min diameter. It is conical in shape and its slopes are rather
steep, especially on the northern and north-western side. The top of the mound
rises to 333.8m above see level and is entirely covered by a modem Islamic
