This was our fourth scason in thc sector of downtown
I’alniyra, allottcd to thc mission by thc Dircctoratc Gcncral of
Antiquitics in I9KN. Wc havc continucd thc excavation and limilcd
restoralion of two of thc major monuments in thc arca of rcgular
city blocks stretching northwards from thc Grcat Colonnade
bctwccn thc 'I’ctrapylon and thc Funcrary Tcmplc. Thcsc
monumcnts arc: a basilica with an adjoining colonnadcd court, and
a largc residential unit across thc strect to the cast. 1
Thc house and its decoration arc safcly datcd, sincc thc first
scason, to tlic sccond half of thc 2 nd ccntury A.D. It remaincd in
usc, as shown in my formcr rcports, until thc 9 lh ccntury, whcn it
was finally abandoncd along with thc wholc arca of downtown
Palmyra, as thc finds from Diocletian’s Camp also suggcst.
During thc 1988 and 1990 seasons wc wcrc not ablc to
complctc ihc excavalion of this largc rcsidcncc which covers well
ovcr 1000 m\ So far wc havc clcared 24 rooms groupcd around
two courtyards providcd with columns. Four of Ihese rooms vvcre
cxcavaled this ycar on thc SE sidc of thc rcception court (loci 23
- 26). The outlinc of a furthcr thrcc rooms along thc southcrn sidc
of thc samc court has bccn establishcd, revealing a link with the
still uncxcavatcd third court of which thrcc columns stand above
